Diabetic Nephropathy

Applies to:

Diabetic nephropathy occurs after kidney damage and is usually caused by diabetes, though not all diabetes sufferers develop nephropathy. Our doctors can detect nephropathy by checking for the protein albumin in the urine. If you smoke, have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or are a member of certain high-risk groups, you are more likely to develop nephropathy. It’s important to find kidney damage early to keep it from being worse. Medicines like ACE inhibitors and ARBs can also be effective, as can medicines to keep triglyceride levels low. Keeping blood sugar in the target range is another key treatment for nephropathy.
