Dupuytren’s Contracture Release Hand

Dupuytren’s Contracture Release Hand

Dupuytren’s contracture is a progressive disease where the skin and tissues of the hand become thick and tight, making your fingers hard to bend. To restore mobility, your surgeon may perform Dupuytren’s contracture release surgery, making an incision in the hand to remove the thickened tissue. This improves hand movement by freeing the skin and joints and increasing finger mobility. It is a precise surgery because the nerves in the hand are often in this area of thickened tissue. Sometimes, skin grafts are needed to replace the overlying skin; skin grafts are performed by taking a piece of healthy skin from another area of the body (called the donor site) and attaching it to the needed area. After surgery, hand therapy helps increase finger motion, strength, and function.
