Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy

Diabetic peripheral neuropathy is nerve damage resulting from diabetes and is the disease’s most common complication. About 60-70 percent of all people who suffer from diabetes will develop diabetic peripheral neuropathy, although not all will experience pain from the condition. Controlling blood sugar levels can prevent or minimize nerve damage. Diabetic neuropathy may lead to numbness, pain, or loss of sensation in the feet, legs, or hands.

Risk factors for developing diabetic peripheral neuropathy include:

  • Degree of glycemic control in both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes
  • Duration of diabetes
  • Age
  • Smoking
  • Hypertension
  • Hyperlipidemia (elevated cholesterol levels)
