Discogenic Back Pain

Discogenic back pain is the most common type of back pain and accounts for around a third of all cases of lower back pain. Studies suggest that causes for discogenic back pain are from degeneration of a disc between the vertebrae in your back. This may be caused by an injury and subsequent repair of the outer portion of a vertebral disk (annulus fibrosus).

Discogenic back pain can be classified into two types: Annular disruption-induced low back pain and internal endplate-disruption-induced low back pain.

Treatment can relieve the symptoms but can not restore the disc’s structure. However, medical researchers have grown more interested in developing strategies to repair discs biologically.
