Epidural Nerve Block

Epidural Nerve Block

An epidural nerve block is a common treatment for back pain due to spinal stenosis, herniated disc, or sciatica. The effects of an epidural nerve block can last a long time, and many individuals can go on to have freedom from back pain.

To begin the procedure, a local anesthetic is used to numb the site before a spinal needle is inserted. Corticosteroid medication, along with an anesthetic, is injected into the epidural space of the spinal column. The injection helps shrink swelling around nerve roots and relieve associated pain. The block is done with the help of imaging to ensure precise administration of the medication.

Usually, three injections are indicated, scheduled two to three weeks apart. However, if complete relief is obtained after one or two, further treatments may not be necessary.
